Paul Tough recently published one of the most stimulating and talked-about books on education. How Children Succeed combines a marvellous set of stories with concrete evidence to show that qualities of character (grit, curiosity, perseverance) can have as much a impact on how children turn out in life as academic success in the form of qualifications.
So, why do schools focus predominantly on academic knowledge? Well, that’s a key question that Tough’s book makes it easier to ask. And ask we must! Tough also does a good job introducing the schools and thought leaders who are progressing more rounded and more authentic ways to help children succeed.
In this video, Paul outlines his view on the development and assessment of these character-related skills.
